This ultra-modern cancer center integrates interior design, architecture, and landscape architecture to enhance patient well-being and comfort, critical to the development of a healing environment. Samsung developed a new paradigm in cancer treatment facilities for the 652-bed hospital, the largest cancer centre in Asia of its time.

A feeling of being in a garden surrounded by the larger natural world was the conceptual direction for all aspects of the design, and steered the selection of interior materials, finishes, lighting, and way-finding. The interior finish palette is light and neutral to orient the focus to the garden outside, and to reinforce the material’s natural beauty and the Korean cultural considerations were integrated into the planning and uses of space.

A naturally beautiful landscape surrounding three edges of the building creates a sense of being in a garden. The architecture and interior design has enhanced the relationship between nature and patients and families. A large-scale public atrium focuses on the gardens and forest preserve areas, while serving as the primary organizing space for the new building.

The atrium reinforces patient way-finding and the perception of a healing environment throughout the project. Roof gardens accessed from the outpatient podium further extend the connection with nature and its healing effects. The project was completed in association with Samoo Architects Engineers of Seoul.
